A carpenter from Saint-Malo sets sail
Born around 1588 in Saint-Servan (some sources say 1591), he crossed the Atlantic to New France as a carpenter and sailor. Quebec then counted a few dozen Europeans. He never went back.

The first marriage in Quebec's registers
He married Guillemette Hébert, daughter of the colony's first farming settler. It was the first marriage recorded in the registers of Notre-Dame de Québec. Ten children followed, and with them a sizeable share of Quebec's genealogy.

On 27 April 1627, he became the first man to plough Canadian soil with oxen. Four centuries later, another Guillaume Couillard ploughs through databases. The spiritual lineage remains to be proven.

Ennobled for his deeds in Canada
France made him a noble in December 1654 for his services to the colony. His descendants are countless, and include Philippe Couillard, Premier of Quebec from 2014 to 2018. Nobody has yet connected me to that lineage. Genealogists are welcome.
